Daredevil
Daredevil was not quite what I had been expecting, yet I was certainly not at all displeased with what it was. Being on Netflix, as a Netflix show, I had my reservations at first. I didn’t go into it having watched any trailer, or even reading up on who the cast would include. So, I went in with an open mind. I tend to love anything Marvel and super hero related. I also like Superman and Batman, Justice League and many DC characters. Honestly I was hoping it would be good, even knowing there was only thirteen episodes in the season.

One thing I will say before I start is that the level of violence in the show was really surprising. Most Marvel shows or movies, such as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D or Avengers, are family friendly enough that you don’t feel that kids should leave the room at any point while they are on. I would give them a rating of PG, and at most for anything I’ve seen Marvel related, PG-13. Yet with Daredevil, I kept cringing and being caught off guard by how graphic the violence was. Fair warning if you are looking for a family friendly show for you and the kids: this is not made for younger kids, so you may want to watch an episode or two yourself first and decide from there on in.

Now that that has been addressed…I really liked it! The characters and their actors were all very good. I was told some people were annoyed by Foggy–played by Elden Henson–Matt Murdock’s best friend and partner in their attorney business. I can understand that to a degree. He was a little annoying, a bit emotional, yet not annoying enough to bother me much at all. I was wary about the unknown actor, Charlie Cox, playing Daredevil at first. Or at least he’s an actor I’m not familiar with. I wasn’t sure if I liked him or not. Yet a couple episodes in I could see he was very well suited to the role. By the end I fully support him and think he is a talented actor and hope to see him return if they do a season two. Needless to say I am very much hoping that there is a season two.

Deborah Ann Woll, my favorite baby vamp from True Blood, and a very beautiful, talented woman, portrayed Karen Page. I loved her character, and I love the actress. She is one of my favorites and I was so glad she is the main female in the show. It was a very pleasant surprise when she appeared, and while I was a little curious how she would do in the role, as I never saw her as anyone but Jessica Hamby, she was fantastic. The other character that impressed me a lot was actually Wilson Fisk, the primary villain. He was played by Vincent D’Onofrio, another actor whom I did not know from anything else. I couldn’t stand Wilson Fisk. I felt sorry for him, and was actually scared of him. He represents pure, raw power. A big man, with a lot of money, who seems unstoppable. He is mentally unstable, creepy in a big way, and just an amazing villain all around. I was so impressed that this actor could have his character illicit so many feelings about him in me. Big kudos to this man.

The story was great. It was a Daredevil origins story done very well. I didn’t know what was going to happen next. I wasn’t even sure who would win in the end. I’m not even sure the side that did win, really did. Wanting that second season very much! The characters were believable, and you could emphasize easily with all of them. Even the villain. The effects were well done, for what they were. Of course there were hardly really any ‘super powers’ outside of Matt’s super senses and the abilities he was trained to be able to do. Yet that hardly mattered; he is still a solid, awesome super hero in my books. Would I recommend this show to you? Definitely! If you want a solid show with good characters, an awesome origin story for Daredevil, and one of the best villains I’ve seen without powers in a long time? Have a watch.

As always, feel free to comment! I’ve seen the show but others may not have, so please tag your comment with ‘SPOILERS’ if you intend to reveal any. Also feel free to recommend or mention any other shows you think I might like–though chances are I may be watching them, or have watched them, already. I do get on benders of shows quite often.

Yours truly,

Tales of Souls
