Vanilla Sky

If you are the kind of person, like me, who enjoys movies that really confuse you until the end, and screw with your mind all during…you will love this movie.

I was told to give this movie a watch, and so did. I have mixed feelings about Tom Cruise as an actor. Top Gun, Rain Man, Jerry Maguire, and the Mission Impossible movies I have seen were good. Yet something about much of his acting bugs me from time to time. Yet I will say this: he was fantastic in this movie. He did a good job in his role, and I very much enjoyed it.

It’s hard to give a review of the movie without giving any spoilers. It was the kind of movie that, like Donnie Darko, really makes you wonder exactly what is going on. When you think you’ve guessed it, you’re probably wrong. Then when the ending comes, finally you realize you had plenty of clues all along as to what might be going on, if you had known to pay closer attention. I did catch on to a couple of them and suspect, yet I didn’t guess what it was going on. Which is saying something, because I usually do catch on, and annoy people with knowing what happens at the end, or next! I won’t say, of course, if they haven’t already seen it. Rest assured, this movie is really well done.

I’m not a Cameron Diaz fan, yet she also did a good job of portraying her character. Her character had me thinking the movie would be about her and how crazy she was. You see that right at the start, so I’m not spoiling anything there. Penelope Cruz also did well in her own role. I had gone in thinking it was going to be a movie on a rich, egotistical man-child growing up and learning a life lesson. Maybe about crazy women. It was a little of those, but much more of other things. I won’t spoil. I will encourage you to watch it though, because I’d love to see your comments on what you think! For those who have not watched it, please tag ‘SPOILERS!’ at the top of your comment so they don’t have to read it and see. It was the kind of movie I will be going back to watch again now that I know what happens, because I know the second time around I’ll see everything I missed the first time while I was busy trying to figure out what on Earth was going on or the movie was supposed to be about.

Yours truly,

Tales of Souls

  1. Easily one of Cameron Crowe’s best film; sadly an american attempted remake of a great foreign film. Still well executed, and visually stunning at times. Same opinion on the actors. They were typecast to break type. It was pretty cool for that.
